Definition - What does Accident mean?

An accident, within the context of Worker's Compensation, is an unexpected event that causes an interruption to the performance of work activities and that may result in injury, illness, or death to one or more employees. Many companies track days without an accident as part of their safety and incentive programs.

An accident is an unintended action that has a negative result. For the purposes of Worker's Compensation, an accident must fit into several criteria including:

1. An external event that is unforeseen and sudden

2. It results from the performance of occupational duties

3. It occurs during hours of work, either on or off the premises or in transit to or from the premises

4. It causes bodily harm

5. There is a direct link between the bodily harm and the event
