Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs that are used as tranquilizers for various illnesses. Some prescribed uses are to help alleviate insomnia, reduce panic attacks, and others reduce seizures. There are many brand names under this heading including Klonopin, Ativan, Valium, and Xanax. Benzodiazepines are not meant to be long-term treatments. Taking a tranquilizer at work may make the user unusually sleeping, feel foggy and impair motor skills. Some of the initial side effects will often subside as the person’s system gets used to the drug.

Benzodiazepines are a class of drug that are sometimes abused due to addiction issues. A patient can build a tolerance to benzodiazepines over times so that dosages must be raised to achieve the previous effect. This can lead to the patient self-medicating with ever higher dosages or adding other substances to the mix.
Generally, patients do not become addicted while on a short course of the drug. Long-term use can result in physical dependence. The withdrawal symptoms are not pleasant and are much the same as withdrawal from illegal drugs.
