Definition - What does Hyperirritability mean?

Hyperirritability is a medical term used to describe an excessive or exaggerated reaction to stimuli. The term is used to describe both mental and physical responses. Hyperirritability may occur due to an overreaction to stimuli or an over sensitivity to that stimuli. Examples of hyperirritable reactions include skin rashes caused by hypersensitivity or an exaggerated fear response caused by a previous emotional trauma.

Hyperirritable responses are those which are uninhibited or disproportionate. Examples of physical conditions characterized by hyperirritability include asthma and myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Asthma suffers experience hyperirritability in their airways resulting in inflammation and difficulty breathing. Those suffering from MPS has trigger points in their muscles that are hyper sensitive and trigger pain reactions at other points in the sufferer's body.

When used to describe psychological reactions, hyperirritability may include responses that are aggressive or fearful. Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) and post-concussion syndrome are examples of conditions that may include symptoms of hyperirritability.

Treatment for hyperirritability depends on the underlying causes of the condition.
