Immunoglobulin, another term for an antibody, is a vital part of the human immune system. Immunoglobulin is also used to detect the presence of certain drugs in the worker's body. The immunoglobulin binds to the specific drugs, or to the metabolites of the drug, that are being screened for, without binding to other substances in the sample. The drugs detected must be found in levels above federally mandated cutoff levels.

Immunoglobulin is used in certain types of drug testing to detect the previous use of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP, and amphetamines. The immunoglobulin binds to the specific metabolites of the drug that are being screened for just as it would bind to antigens such as bacteria or viruses as part of the immune system reaction. The drugs metabolites detected can not show the amount of drug ingested or currently remaining in the employee's system.
