Definition - What does Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mean?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, is a United States governmental organization that was created to introduce and enforce standards of safety measures intended to foster workplace health and covers across-the-board employers of particular fields and distinct trades. The purpose of OSHA is to define guidelines within the context of health and safety that identifies potential workplace hazards relative to environmental surroundings including equipment, ergonomics, available resources, and effective protocol management.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration, or OSHA, relates to a federally established agency that serves to coordinate proper workplace health and safety statutes for all employers. OSHA requires employers adopt under a strict code of compliance and is enforceable by law. OSHA was founded after the OSHA Act passed in 1971, which represents a universal standard applied to all companies, excepting certain small business owners, in the interest of protecting employees from injurious or potentially deadly circumstances that can occur on the job. Since its inception, OSHA-regulated policies and procedures has become a normative function, managing to dramatically reduce the number of workplace accidents and/or deaths on a broad scale.
