Definition - What does Thoracic mean?

Thoracic is a Greek term for the human chest that begins at the base of the neck and extends down to the diaphragm muscle directly above the stomach. The thorax is an interconnected network of bones, cartilage, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. The bony configuration of the thorax consists of the sternum, also called the breastplate, located at the front joining twelve ribs that curve around to the back articulating with the spinal column.

SureHire explains Thoracic

The thoracic cavity is a hollow space containing vital organs including the esophagus, heart, lungs, and trachea (windpipe) that perform essential biological and physiological functions and processes. The ribcage, combined with hard and soft tissue of the thoracic region, serves as a protective barrier against potential injuries to primary anatomical structures. For instance, the chest wall (thorax) encloses the heart and lungs, which operate interdependently as the cardiorespiratory system, delivering and maintaining oxygenated blood levels on a cycle in regulating homeostasis.

For many individuals, the thoracic area is a location where many common pathological conditions develop, posing acute and/or chronic health issues. In the workplace, stress can induce psychological disturbances such as anxiety and depression. Workplace environments where stress is relatively high contribute to distractions, decreased morale, diminished productivity, and, in turn, curtailed company profits. High stress levels also carry physical implications associated with the cardiopulmonary and respiratory systems, for example, myocardial infarction (heart attack) and pneumonia.
