COVID-19 Return-to-Work Program

The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has changed occupational health and safety on a global scale. With no treatments or vaccines available to prevent the virus from spreading, employers are exploring all methods for prevention so they can keep their employees safe and their job sites open.

As Canada’s leading provider of occupational health testing services, SureHire is committed to building foundations for safe, healthy, and productive workforces and communities. As your solution-driven partner in occupational testing services, we’ve developed a comprehensive COVID-19 Return-to-Work Program that will help you feel confident knowing your employees are safe to return to work.

Program Details

COVID-19 is transported primarily through respiratory droplets. Symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, and shortness of breath. These symptoms may appear 2‒14 days after exposure and can range from mild to severe and may even result in fatality.

Our COVID-19 Return-to-Work Program is a proactive prevention measure that helps employers detect signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and limit the risk of transmission at work. The full program consists of the following services, but you can select the services you’d like to create a fully customized program designed to fit your company’s unique testing needs.

COVID-19 Automated Health Risk Assessment (HRA) Questionnaire

Pre-existing conditions, such as seasonal allergies, asthma, etc., can mimic the symptoms of COVID-19. Our Automated HRA Questionnaire allows employers to collect comparative data from employees who may have these types of pre-existing conditions so they are not unnecessarily flagged and sent off-site to self-isolate. *Data does not reveal the type of pre-existing condition an employee has. Instead, it simply shows employers that a pre-existing condition is present and may present symptoms similar to COVID-19.

Click here for more information about our COVID-19 Automated HRA Questionnaire Program.

Temperature Screening Services

While temperature readings do not specifically correlate with COVID-19 diagnosis (as other medical conditions can also present with fever, such as pneumonia, flu, etc.), they do provide valuable, objective data on a critical symptom of COVID-19 (fever), helping employers limit the risk of worker exposure to and potential transmission of the virus.

Employees’ temperatures are taken at the start of each shift with an FDA approved, non-touch digital infrared temperature screening device. The data is then recorded and compared on a daily basis to the 38°C cut-off level. Screening is conducted in a temperature-controlled environment (at least 15°C). Choose to train your employees to provision screening or have SureHire screeners onsite to conduct readings for you (SureHire will provide all necessary PPE). *It is important to note that if employees have a naturally high body temperature, they may be flagged unnecessarily as being over the defined cut-off level; however, FDA-approved devices ensure accurate readings and easy implementation on any worksite.

COVID-19 Instant Antibody Facility Testing

*Available pending Health Canada's approval.

Designed to detect antibodies 5 to 7 days after symptoms first appear, the test shows clear results in just 15 minutes with over 90% detection accuracy. Accuracy of the COVID-19 Instant Antibody Facility Testing is based on clinical data measuring relative sensitivity and relative specificity of Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG). Clinical data for the COVID-19 Antibody test revealed:

  • The sensitivity for IgM detection is 93.7%. The sensitivity for IgG detection is 98.8%
  • The specificity for IgM detection is 99.1% and the specificity for IgG detection is 98.7%.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE COVID-19 HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT (HRA) QUESTIONNAIRE?

SureHire’s HRA reduces risk of worksite interruption from COVID-19 by providing critical data on worker symptoms related to pre-existing medical conditions (eg. seasonal allergies that exhibit symptoms of coughing and a runny nose, breathing difficulties related to asthma, etc.). This offers employers the ability to more effectively manage workers who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, but who haven’t been officially diagnosed with COVID-19. This, in turn, reduces the risk of worker exposure to COVID-19 from co-workers.

WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF THE COVID-19 HRA QUESTIONNAIRE?

The HRA questionnaire does not guarantee that a worker does not have COVID-19. The assessment relies on honest self-reporting, which may not always happen. Additionally, a worker with a pre-existing medical condition that has symptoms similar to COVID-19 can still contract the virus. This assessment is designed only to give employers more context around each worker’s health situation related to COVID-19, as well as ammunition to mitigate operational risk and worker risk through more informed and reasonable decision making.

ARE THERE PRIVACY ISSUES RELATED TO COLLECTING HEALTH INFORMATION?

There are no privacy issues related to collecting a worker’s health information because the information collected does not contain any identifying health information related to specific diagnosed medical illnesses or conditions. The assessment simply focuses on symptoms that can mimic COVID-19, so the responses collected from the questionnaires are not classified as health information.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TEMPERATURE SCREENING?
  • Provides objective data on a critical symptom of COVID-19 (fever).
  • Easy to implement on any worksite.
  • FDA-approved devices ensure accurate readings.
  • Helps limit the risk of worker exposure to COVID-19 through proactive prevention measures.
  • Thermal testing is a non-invasive testing procedure providing instant results.
  • No direct contact required between worker and tester.
WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF TEMPERATURE SCREENING?

  • Temperature readings do not specifically correlate with COVID-19 diagnosis, as other medical conditions can also present with fever (allergies, flu, etc.).
  • There is a possibility of employees being flagged unnecessarily if they have a naturally high body temperature and readings exceed the defined cut-off level.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ANTIBODY TESTING?

  • Best current method of detecting possible immunity to COVID-19.
  • Risk exposure to worksite populations is reduced if immunity is identified in individual employees.
  • Risk of contraction of COVID-19 is reduced if immunity is present in the employee.
  • Can assist in identifying what stage of infection an individual is in. Early-stage infection typically creates different antibodies vs. late-stage infection. Antibody testing can identify which antibody types are present, giving information on where the individual is at in their infection-recovery cycle.

WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF ANTIBODY TESTING?

  • Concerns with specificity of testing: “false positives” may occur, which would mean that employees who you think are immune are actually not.
  • Does not diagnose COVID-19.
  • Separate testing must be completed for diagnostic purposes.

HOW ACCURATE IS COVID-19 INSTANT ANTIBODY TESTING?

Accuracy of the COVID-19 Instant Antibody Facility Testing is based on clinical data measuring relative sensitivity and relative specificity of Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG). IgG is the most common antibody, found in blood and other body fluids. It protects against bacterial and viral infections. IgM is found mainly in blood and lymph fluid, this is the first antibody the body makes when it fights a new infection. Relative Sensitivity refers to the likelihood that something has been identified. Relative Specificity refers to the likelihood that what you’ve identified is what you’re looking for. Clinical data for the COVID-19 Antibody test revealed:

  • The sensitivity for IgM detection is 93.7%. The sensitivity for IgG detection is 98.8%.
  • The specificity for IgM detection is 99.1% and the specificity for IgG detection is 98.7%.
