Drug Testing

Workers under the influence of drugs while on the job site can compromise the safety of themselves, others, and the public and can contribute to increases in:

  • WCB claims
  • employee turnover
  • absenteeism
  • employee theft
  • workplace violence

The implementation of pre-employment, pre-access, post-incident, and reasonable cause testing is a great mitigation tool to  decrease the risk of substance abuse in the workplace.

DIFFERENT TEST TYPES

There are a variety of test types to choose from depending on your company’s needs. SureHire offers 2 test options:

  • Express POCT (Point of Care Test) | Provides quick, qualitative, same-day result delivery.
  • Lab Based Test | Provides quantitative, court-admissible test results in 2‒5 business days. Negative results typically take 1–2 business days, while positive samples will take 3–5 business days. Once a sample is deemed positive by the lab, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will have an additional 48 hours to contact the donor to determine if there is a valid prescription. Once the MRO has determined if there is a valid prescription, the result is confirmed as either positive or negative.

SureHire utilizes a SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Association) certified laboratory for lab-based urine testing.

NON-REGULATED URINE DRUG TESTING

Urine drug testing is the preferred method for substance detection as it offers expanded testing panels, accurate test results, and the ability to obtain a snapshot of recent drug use. A non-regulated urine drug test has the ability to screen for the following substances:

  • THC
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates
  • Heroin (6-AM)
  • Amphetamine
  • MDMA
  • PCP
  • Oxycodone
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Barbiturates
  • Propoxyphene
  • Methadone
  • Fentanyl
  • GHB

ORAL FLUID DRUG TESTING

Oral Fluid drug testing is the preferred method for post-incident or reasonable suspicion situations as it provides a short window for substance detection with minimal potential for adulteration. This drug screen option is extremely convenient as there are very few limitations as to where this test can be administered. An oral fluid drug test has the ability to screen for the following substances:

  • THC
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates
  • Amphetamine
  • PCP
  • Methamphetamine
  • Methadone
  • Propoxyphene
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Barbiturates

There are several variables that will determine how long a substance will remain detectable in an individual’s oral fluid sample but ultimately, it’s completely dependent on the substance ingested and the individual being tested.

Oral Fluid express testing provides a qualitative, preliminary result; however, a lab-based oral fluid test is required to obtain a quantitative, court-admissible test result. SureHire offers oral fluid laboratory testing as a secondary method after a non-negative express result is received or as a stand-alone service.

HAIR FOLLICLE DRUG TESTING

Hair Follicle testing is the superior method for determining substance abuse. This highly accurate drug testing technology offers a wide range of detection time frames that can approximate the pattern and quantity of drug use. SureHire’s partner, Psychemedics, the only CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved hair testing laboratory in North America,  provides a gold standard testing panel that includes:

  • THC
  • Opiates
  • Amphetamines
  • Cocaine
  • PCP

This panel provides the following testing time frame options:

  • 30-Day
  • 60-Day
  • 90 Day
  • 180-Day (6 Months)
  • 365-Day (12 Months)

HOW LONG IS A SUBSTANCE DETECTABLE IN AN ORAL FLUID SAMPLE?

There are several variables that will determine how long a substance will remain detectable in an individual's oral fluid sample but ultimately, it's completely dependant on the substance ingested and the individual being tested.

CAN ORAL FLUID DRUG TESTING BE SELECTED FOR REASONS BESIDES POST INCIDENT AND REASONABLE SUSPICION?

Absolutely. The method of drug testing is at the discretion of the employer or individual and can be selected for pre-employment, pre-access, random testing etc. However, urine drug testing is the preferred method for pre-employment or pre-access situations as it offers an increased detection timeline.

HOW ACCURATE IS ORAL FLUID TESTING?

Oral Fluid express testing provides a qualitative, preliminary result, however, a lab-based oral fluid test is required to obtain a quantitative, court-admissible test result. SureHire offers oral fluid laboratory testing as a secondary method after a non-negative express result is received or as a stand-alone service.

HOW SOON AFTER USE CAN A DRUG BE DETECTED IN HAIR?

It takes approximately 5-7 days from the time of drug use for the portion of the hair containing that drug to grow above the scalp.

HOW MUCH HAIR IS NEEDED?

To complete a standard 90-day hair follicle test, a minimum of 1.5 inches is required (0.5 inches per month). The amount taken is usually cosmetically undetectable and can be compared to the thickness of a shoelace tip.

IF I DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT HEAD HAIR, CAN BODY HAIR BE COLLECTED?

SureHire does not accept body hair as an alternative collection method when head hair is unavailable or insufficient.
