Definition - What does Vigilance mean?

Vigilance is the fundamental prerequisite for the processing of information experienced through all the body's senses at a given time. Vigilance is supported by the subcortical brain region. Research studies show that there is a link between vigilance and operational errors. This means that as vigilance wanes, errors and accidents are more likely to happen. Vigilance can also be referred to as sustained attention or sustained concentration.

Vigilance is the ability to concentrate on a particular activity without becoming distracted over a period of time. Distractions interrupt vigilance. Factors that influence vigilance are the frequency of events and the amount of sources of stimuli. Vigilance is important for cognitive development. A person who is unable to practice vigilance cannot react to changes in the environment and change their behavior accordingly. Vigilance is one factor that must be considered when planning the ergonomics of a work station and job duties.
